2.5 Oracle 9i Availability Improvements

For the last few releases Oracle have been putting a lot of effort into increasing database availability and this continues with Oracle 9i with new features including:-

disaster recovery enhancements (standby database management, LogMiner)
reduction in off-line maintenance requirements (CREATE TABLE ... AS SELECT... etc.)
faster and more precise database repair (after corruption/instance failure)
enabling queries to go back in time with flashback queries

2.6 Oracle 9i Internet Content Management

Oracle 9i can be used for the storage and manipulation of many different types of data. The new features are:-

Internet File Store improvements
searching/indexing of multimedia and XML data
support for collaborative projects via the creation of shared workspaces, allowing multiple versions of content to exists simultaneously
ability to create applications to make use of location information of clients and services (e.g. for use with mobile phones)

2.7 Oracle 9i Ecommerce integration

The enhancements Oracle 9i provides in this area are:

pre-built objects for creating store fronts, exchanges and portals to provide a faster time-to-market and enable easier integration with the back-end
support for standard messaging formats to enable faster integration of the store front with the back-end and external systems

2.8 Oracle 9i Packaged applications

The improvements in this area comprise:

enhanced globalization features (enables multiple languages to be supported simultaneously on the same database through use of the UTF8 character set)
enhanced 3rd party development features (stored outlines and default column values)

2.9 Oracle 9i Business Intelligence

The enhancements for business intelligence provided by Oracle can be grouped into 2 main categories:

enhancements to database performance, scalability and manageability (e.g. new list partitioning method)
enhanced analysis (OLAP), ETL (extraction, transformation and loading) and data mining features

2.10 Oracle 9i Windows integration

Oracle 9i has been enhanced to take advantage of the new Windows features including:

integration of single sign-on and PKI with Active Directory and Microsoft Certificate Store
better integration with IIS and Microsoft's Transaction Services and Message Queuing
enhanced development features (Oracle Data Objects etc.)

Summary

Oracle has enhanced the database in many areas with Oracle 9i but particular emphasis has been given to the support for their larger customers (perhaps unsurprisingly as they spend the most money and have the most demanding requirements) by increasing performance and scalability and at the same time making the database easier to manage thereby reducing the total cost of ownership (TCO), to keep the bean counters and the techies and the users all happy.
