What is normalisation?
From: Walter Rieppi - In this year i would like to try the Oracle exam to pass the OCP
certification. I have a subscription to oracle magazine. I heard about another magazine which
name is Oracle internal. What do you think about this
magazine. Is the article easy for a newbie in Oracle
or are so complicated and i can't understand it?
We haven't come across that magazine, so we can't
comment on it. However we can say that the best way to
learn enough about Oracle to be able to pass the Oracle
certification exams is to download the software from the
Oracle Technology Network, (see the resources page for
the link). Once you've installed the software, test backup
and recovery, sql, changing database parameters etc.
You also need to know the theory and the best way to do
this is to buy a few decent Oracle books including the
certification guide (see the resources page for
recommendations) or for a short cut consider taking of our scheduled Oracle training courses. We would
also recommend you consult our condensed version of the certification process.

From: shiva shankar - What is the exact definition of normalisation? How many types are there?
please explain them in detail.
Normalization is the process of decomposing objects into their constituent parts, removing repeating
groups and any items not functionally dependent on the key. The process was defined by Dr. E.F. Codd in
1970 when he defined the relational (database) model.
There are 6 levels of normalization called normal forms (abbreviated NF): 1st normal form (1NF); 2nd
normal form 2NF; 3rd normal form (3NF); Boyce-Codd normal form (BCNF); 4th normal form (4NF); and
5th normal form (5NF). Each is a refinement of the previous normal form, although it is very rare to
progress beyond 3NF.
It should be stressed that normalization is an analysis tool, not a programming tool, so in practice most
databases will be denormalized to a certain extent to improve performance. The trade off is redundant
storage of information.
