Introduction
Oracle Database Certification
Further Reading/Other resources
Questions about Oracle database certification for developers and dbas have been popping up a lot recently, so rather than repeat the same information time and time again, we thought we'd devote a whole (but shorther than normal) issue to Oracle Certification in the hope that this won't be too taxing for those of us in Europe who are sweltering in the current heat wave.
The resources section at the end of this article has recommendations for further reading to enhance your knowledge of Oracle and contains links to information on OTN and other places.
Smartsoft also offer instructor-led Oracle 9i training courses, SQL courses and UNIX courses for developers and dbas either on site or off site. This course cover the curriculum required to pass the Oracle certification exams, alternatively any of our training courses can be tailored to your exact needs to provide an even bigger return on your investment. See our Oracle courses section for more details or UNIX courses

At the moment DBA certification is rather complicated: you can certify on Oracle 8i or on Oracle 9i. Oracle 8i certification has just one level - Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) - whereas Oracle 9i certification has three levels:-
You can certify as an Oracle 9i DBA OCP either by taking and passing all the exams (see below) or by upgrading from a previous release (Oracle7, Oracle8 or Oracle 8i).
If you're certified on Oracle7 you have to upgrade to Oracle8 first, by passing the Oracle8 New Features for Administrators exam (#1Z0-010), then upgrade to Oracle 8i and finally to Oracle9i.
If you're certified on Oracle8 you have to upgrade to Oracle8i first by passing the Oracle8i New Features for Administrators exam (#1Z0-020), then to Oracle 9i.
If you're certified on Oracle8i you can upgrade your certificaton to Oracle8i by passing the Oracle9i New Features for Administrators exam (#1Z0-030).
If you have no certifciation currently you can gain Oracle 8i certification by passing the following exams:-
and then gain OCP certification on Oracle 9i by passing passing the Oracle9i New Features for Administrators exam (#1Z0-030) as noted previously.
Alternatatively you go straight for Oracle 9i certification. For Oracle 9i Oracle Certified Associate (OCA) certification you have to pass just these 2 exams:-
This gives you a foundation or apprentice qualification which Oracle describe as enabling you to act as a junior team member.
To become an Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) on Oracle 9i, you have to take at least one Oracle University Oracle 9i DBA hands-on course as well as pass another 2 exams:-
Once you've qualified as an Oracle Certified Professional on Oracle 9i, the next stage is to become an Oracle Certified Master. To qualify for this you need to take at least 2 advanced courses from Oracle University and then pass a 2-day practical exam which test you on subjects such as database configuration, network configuration, Enterprise Manager set up and configuration, using RMAN (recovery manager), creating a standby database, recovering from errors, etc. You're not allowed to take in your own notes or "phone a friend" - you're on your own! But they do provide you with a complete set of the Oracle documentation which is very kind of them. The pass mark in this is 70% and if you fail you have to do the whole lot over again.
At present, the easiest and cheapest route to Oracle 9i certification is to upgrade from certification on an earlier version. If you don't qualify for that route you have to take the 4 Oracle 9i OCP exams plus an Oracle University 9i DBA course. But if you've ever wondered whether Oracle certification was worth the trouble then see this article on Oracle certification benefits.
